App Development:
A Mobile Learning Application
Description: A local urban elementary school has a one-acre lot with a greenhouse, raised beds, fruit trees, and pollinator garden. Our goal was to design an app that would allow the school to seamlessly integrate the garden into their curriculum and classrooms. The app will help keep students engaged from the classroom to the garden and serve as an in-field tool for planning and data collection. See more information and images of the mock up below.
Software: Figma, Canva, Powerpoint
Created with: Jen Meeks, Kayla Weiglein
Garden Academy was developed with three criteria in mind;
Constructivist:
Learning will be built on the foundation the students already have about plants
Collaborative:
Collaboration will be facilitated between students and teachers
Learning Centered:
This app will facilitate learning centered education by creating a structured environment that students can explore and experiment with at a self-guided pace.

Garden Academy log in screen. Requiring accounts and logins, allows for privacy and protection of student information.
After logging in, users are taken to a home screen displaying icons that lead to each individual page/function.
Garden Calendar that highlights which tasks will need done that day for different plants. Teachers and administrators can upload and manage task lists.
Photo album for students to upload daily photos of plant growth and work done. Photos can be kept private in the personal "your album" option or uploaded to the shared "class album".
Messaging center. The messaging center facilitates an opportunity for peer to peer communication or teacher to student communication. This creates an easy option to ask questions and check in on student progress.
A information guide that details local plants and animals that may be in or near the garden. Great for students to use as an optional resource or for teachers to find and assign required readings!
Weather tracker.
Sun trackers. Shows the UV level and sun exposure for different times and days.
Quizzes for students. Can be used as an additional resource for students to test their knowledge or assigned as homework by teachers.
Example of what a specific quiz would look like.
Fun garden game where students can plant mock gardens and practice tasks to care for the garden. This can also be used as a fun and engaging alternative assignment for when weather is too bad to go to the garden or if a student is absent.
