Description: BUS352 is a business communications course at Mount Saint Joseph. I worked with Elizabeth Bland, an expert in the this area, to create this assignment. The end goal of this project was to develop an assignment that replicates the experience of being put on the spot and asked a question you don’t know the answer to (we’ve all been there at least once, right?).
This assignment is intended to build students confidence and overall make them aware of how important body language, tone of voice and facial expressions are when communicating.
Software Development:
BUS352 Improv Video Assignment

Problem:
Instructor likes to create “pressured” situations where students must answer random questions in her in person course to prepare them for the stress and pressure of presentations and interviews. The online asynchronous course structure created barriers to replicating these assignments and assessing students communication skills and their ability to interview well.
Solution:
Creating a software that has strict limitations and functions (1 take, 90 seconds, Randomized prompt generator) that replicate the instructors course. The software uses video and audio to record the students attempt and automatically submits when the assignment is completed.
Software: Canva, Blackboard (LMS)
See more about the prototype version that is currently being used below.
Prototype of Improv Assignment
The current prototype uses flipgrid and the two tools listed below. It replicates the assignment fairly well until the software is completed.
Students still only have one take and limited time but they are responsible for spinning a randomized number wheel to determine what number between 1-23 they recieve. They then open their prompt on camera based on that number and answer.
The biggest difference is that it relys heavily on student honesty of whether they do not look at prompt ahead of time and only record one take. The software will eliminate these issues.
